Baby Dragons and Exploding Paint

I wanted to make another button design for Wondercon, and I thought this little happy fat dragon would be perfect! So I cleaned up my sketch and painted her in photoshop.

Then my cousins brought home some really awesome, crafty things called shrinkydinks. If you dont know what they are- like I didnt- check them out, you can make some really cool things with them! ShrinkyDinks!!

I thought, oh how cool, I wanna try my baby dragon! It said acrylic paint was ok, so naturally I assumed gouache paint would be fine too. I recreated my baby dragon on some magical shrinking plastic.

And then we baked her!

Moral of the story, do not bake gouache.

As my friend Ann put it- "This is what it looks like when things in Sarah's world die, they explode into a bomb of glitter and then gently float away into the sunset."

My poor baby dragon. Shes roughly the size of a quarter and totally exploded.

Next experiment will be with markers, and I've ordered the printable shrinkydink paper too, so we'll see where this goes!

Snuggle Lumps and Such

Just a Valentines Day quickie. She was really interesting to play around with losing all the lines. A little but experimental, a lotta bit fun.

Clock is ticking, make art!

First class of Quick Studies this semester, what a crazy class! Its painting with oils... quickly! And I mean QUICK. Craig Nelson walks around the class helping and counting down a ticking clock, its like being on project runway or top chef. "You have 3 minutes left! Make it work!" I havent touched my oils since summer 2010, so coming from the "this is a 3 day pose" painting classes to a "you have 20 minutes, make art" class is quite a different way of approaching oil painting. I think its going to be a lot of fun, and Im really looking forward to doing more!

Visual Elements Part Deux

I was so lucky to be able to take Visual Elements again this past semester as a directed study, which meant I got to focus on my thesis work with the guidance of Nicolas and Sherrie. I proudly present the final product from last semester, ta daaaa. *confetti*

The Loremaster

They traveled looking for answers from what was believed one of the oldest surviving dragons, Niccodemus. They didnt realize that it wasnt a well eaten buffet they were walking through, but a tomb, a graveyard, the final resting spot for the blue and silver Dragons of the Water Flight. Niccodemus had come here to be with all that remained of his kin, he had come here to die.

Turning Point

Desperation left them one choice, to expose themselves and escape through the courtyard. Aranella ran first, to her own demise, as Hallas and Daniel fell behind and to the ground, overcome with an overwhelming fear. Dragon fear. The air was still and the battle drowned to silence as a beautiful, deadly shadow swooped up from the cliffs, behind the castle walls. Aran was alone and central in the dragons sight, and they both took a deep breath...

Character Paintings

After finishing Zephira, I got on this crazy "all my characters need to be painted RIGHT NOW" kick. In the final 2 weeks of my semester I blazed through getting these ones done in time to present them to my visual development class. They were super fun to do, getting into more detail with the costumes and attitudes of my characters. Now its time for fixes and finishing the rest of the cast in time for Wondercon! Exciting.
