Instructing the Younglings

We just finished the summer session of the Art Experience program at the Academy, and I was very honored to be able to teach Character Design! It was an amazing experience for me, to come from the student side of the spectrum right into the teaching side. I loved being able to take everything I learned from my favorite teachers and pass it on to the next generation. And I mean really, these kids were young and up and coming, most of them only Sophomores or Juniors in high school. Plus it was a great way to reinforce all those drawing skills in myself, as I repeated them over and over and over and over to the younglings! It was a huge program for these kids, some of them coming from across the country, or even another country to do this. They took four different classes and we met for about 7 weeks, thats a lot of work on your summer vacation! I had a lot of fun with my kids, they are so talented already, and I hope that they ALL keep drawing!

I think the word of the semester was "STRUCTURE" so just remember that. :P


A few examples and in class demos made for the students. Also the "Draw it Again" challenge for myself, and for the kids I offered the movie project as a bonus, and they did really well with it!

At the end we set up a big presentation so that friends and family could come and see all the hard work these kids have put into their summer! In my class they had to focus on character line ups, character expressions, action poses, and at least a 4 point turn around- which is not the easiest thing to do! Im so proud of them. :}

Some of my kids were extra super special awesome and started drawing me fan art of my Fairy Tale characters! Its heartwarming, and somewhat disturbing at the same time hahaha. All of that "shipping" going on. Kids these days. 

They ever started to draw their own characters that they created in class for each other, which is, in my opinion, pretty damn cool when you can make drawing friends like that.

This last image is not so much art from one of my students, but from our very own Renee. She refused to be upstaged by high school kids and went on a fan art shipping frenzy! Behold.

Thanks everyone involved in this summer experience who made it awesome- from my old teachers who helped me figure things out, to the students who worked so hard, and friends who were t.a.'s hahaha. Hope to see you in the fall!

Avengers Fun Stuff

Well Happy (Captain) America Day! 

Have you seen Ann Marcellinos Sailor Avengers yet??? Cause if you havent then you need to check them out, like, NOW. She combined two of my favorite things and I couldnt help but get caught up in the geekdom of it all! Fan art of her fan art. Fanartception. BAAAAUWWM.

In the Meantime...

I keep putting off the big bad "Yay I finished my thesis and look at all the things I did!" post for some strange reason, maybe I'm thinking too hard about it. So here, lets do something else to just keep the flow happening. Heres a few fun things I've been working on while recovering from grad school, and trying to find a job. 

Ive recently become a huge fan of Mockingbird (if only because it was such a challenge to obtain her in Marvel Avengers Alliance... >_>) But I thought I would start out my Marvel Babes pinup series with her. I'm excited for the ones to come!

And though I havent kept up with my oil quick studies, I've been collecting screen shots of my favorite movies to do some digital quick studies. Here we have a speed painting of Jareth. My colors are a bit muddy and I could have chosen a shot with some better lighting, but for the first one it was fun to crank out. Jareth was probably one of my first loves, and he remains in my life to this day. :B

I Heart Avengers

So, before I make the big "I've passed my final review and made it through grad school!" post, I wanted to throw something quick and fun up.

I took my seven year old cousin Joey to a comic book store today and told him he could pick one super hero and we would find their origin story, or something to read to get to know them better. He chose Captain America ('atta boy) so we picked out a few Avengers things and Cap books for him to read.

Clearly he's not the only on in the family with a little crush on Cap.

But as for me, I made a great find in these Avengers Fairy Tale books. I mean, c'mon! Fairy Tales and Super Heros? Together? There IS totally a place for me in this crazy art world. PLUS the covers were done by the most talented Claire Wendling, which is what drew me to the books in the first place.

As Joey read his Avengers Dream Team and I read my Avengers Fairy Tales, I really fell for the Oz and the Peter Pan stories, and decided to give the Oz team a whirl. Just a quick sketch to get them out of my head, but really fun designs from the book. Maybe after graduation I'll color them. :}
